Surveillance cameras captured a group of thieves stealing a Dodge Charger from a Studio City apartment complex.
The car’s owner, Stephan Wendel, said he was alerted that his car had been stolen by the apartment property manager. “She said, “Your car’s gone. Your car was stolen. Come down.’ It was surreal.”
On Oct. 21, at around 4 a.m., the thieves used a tool to break into the garage through a back gate. Security video captured at least three men making their way to Wendel’s 2017 Dodge Charger Daytona 392.
“They got inside [the garage] and they were in there for a while,” Wendel told KTLA’s Mary Beth McDade. “They got into my car and started the car, I don’t know how.”
However, while trying to exit the garage, they hit a snafu — the gate required an access code to open. The trio stepped out of the car and began searching for a solution.
“They were looking for a clicker in my car, so they opened all the doors and the trunk,” Wendel said.
Failing to find a way out, they re-parked the car and walked back to their nearby white Cadillac sedan as they waited for a resident to return home and open the garage gate.
After waiting for an hour, a resident arrived and opened the gate. Surveillance video showed the suspects’ Cadillac quickly pulling up outside as two men exited and ran over to stop the gate from closing.
One man went to retrieve the Dodge Charger while the second man held the gate open. Moments later, the car was gone.
Wendel said a neighbor spotted the theft and tried to chase after the men, but they sped away.
Wendel has lived in the Studio City apartment complex for nearly 20 years and said he was surprised to be targeted, as the neighborhood is relatively safe.
He filed a police report and is hoping the thieves are caught soon before they target someone else.
