PHOENIX — A 16-year-old boy has been sentenced to prison for threatening his girlfriend with a gun and violently beating her, authorities announced Wednesday.
Troy Aguilar-Olmos attacked his girlfriend in March, after he threatened to shoot and kill her if she didn’t talk to him, according to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office.
However, when she approached him, the then-15-year-old Aguilar-Olmos strangled her.
He also punched her repeatedly and pointed a gun at her back, prosecutors said. He was later arrested at his parent’s home.
What charges did 16-year-old face in domestic violence case?
He pleaded guilty to two counts of aggravated assault, which were both considered domestic violence offenses.
Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell said this case reflects how domestic violence impacts people of all ages.
“What happened to this young woman is heartbreaking. No relationship should ever be marked by fear or violence, no matter the age of the offender,” Mitchell said in the announcement. “Today’s outcome cannot undo the trauma she endured, but it is a step toward justice.”
It’s one of many recent domestic violence cases for which her office has recently announced sentencing.
On Monday, she reaffirmed her office’s support for domestic violence survivors while announcing the sentencing of a man who brutally assaulted his pregnant ex-wife in Surprise. The October 2024 attack showed just how far domestic abusers will go to terrorize their victims, Mitchell said.
