A person is dead and two others hospitalized after a vehicle struck three bicyclists in Huntington Beach Monday morning in what police believe to be a case of driving under the influence of drugs.

Huntington Beach spokesperson Corbin Carson said the crash occurred just after 6:45 a.m. near the intersection of Pacific Coast Highway and Beach Boulevard.

All three of the bicyclists were adult men, and one of them was declared dead at the scene, the Huntington Beach Police Department said in a news release. The other two sustained “severe” injuries, police added.

Aerial footage from Sky5 showed mangled bicycles in the sand alongside the road.

Police said the vehicle, a gold 2006 Mercedes-Benz E-Class, hit the men while they were riding in a bike lane, and the driver, a 43-year-old woman from Long Beach, apparently fled after the crash.

She “ultimately stopped” about a half mile from the crash site, at which point she was arrested for gross vehicular manslaughter, felony hit-and-run and drug possession, police said.

Police added, however, that “the cause of the collision and whether impairment or any other factors played a role remain under investigation.”

Any witnesses or anyone else with information is asked to call police at 714-536-5670.
