WASHINGTON — A top White House official says the Butler, Pa., assassination attempt on President Trump sealed his election win.
“Butler, Pennsylvania … changed everything. Literally changed everything,’’ said Dan Scavino, the new head of the White House Presidential Personnel Office, to Fox News’ “My View with Lara Trump” on Saturday.
“It was from that point forward where I knew that he would be the 47th president of the United States,’’ said Scavino, who has known Trump since the 1990s, when he caddied for him.
The White House higher-up — who oversaw Trump’s social-media accounts for both his campaigns, as well as during his first administration — added that the president’s team is facing far less resistance on Capitol Hill than it had eight years ago.
“The differences are absolutely incredible,” said Scavino, who is also now White House deputy chief of staff.
“We’re not being attacked every day or investigated every day. The head games they played, they wanted to silence us. They ultimately wanted to put us all away for life,’’ he said.
Last week, Trump announced that Scavino would be heading the office that oversees thousands of presidential appointments, vetting candidates including for the more than 1,600 that need Senate confirmations.
Scavino’s predecessor, Sergio Gor, was named ambassador to India.
Gor clashed with many administration officials and even irked some Senate Republicans during his time helming the influential White House Presidential Personnel Office.
Scavino has been with Trump throughout his 2016 presidential campaign, having met him in the 1990s during his time as a bag-room assistant and caddie at Briar Hall Country Club.
The top aide meanwhile predicted that Democrats will lose the government shutdown fight.
“They are losing on this, the likes of which I was going to say they’ve never lost because they’ve lost a lot,’’ Scavino said. “They’re just not on message. They don’t know what they’re doing. Zero leadership. I think they’re truly embarrassing themselves.”
