Lucrecia Martel’s Landmarks (Nuestra Tierra) has won the Best Film Award in the Official Competition at this year’s London Film Festival.

The winners were announced this afternoon, the last day of the LFF.

The LFF Official Competition was led by Elizabeth Karlsen. She was joined by filmmaker and artist Kahlil Joseph and New Yorker critic Justin Chang. Discussing why they chose Landmarks, the jury said in a statement: “With deep empathy and extraordinary journalistic and cinematic rigor, the director Lucrecia Martel dives deep into the events surrounding the 2009 murder of the Chuschagasta leader Javier Chocobar, in Argentina’s Tucumán Province.”

The jury added: “In foregrounding present-day voices and neglected histories, Martel emerges with a portrait of — and for — an Indigenous community, and grants them a measure of the justice the courts have long denied them. Within a remarkably strong competition, our jury is proud to honor this singular achievement.”

Landmarks is Martel’s first documentary and her first feature since 2017’s Zama. We sat down for an in-depth discussion with Martel about the film in September, out of Venice, where the film debuted. You can check out that interview here.

One Woman One Bra by Vincho Nchogu won the coveted Sutherland Award in First Feature Competition. Kibwe Tavares (The Kitchen) led by the Sutherland Award jury, which said they were “incredibly impressed” by Nchogu’s “ability to confidently move between so many tones, but always holding the audience with care. Her film uses humor to a shattering effect. Vincho also elicited fantastic performances from her entire cast, complemented by stunning cinematography throughout. The piece is at once funny, life-affirming, and deeply moving; its emotional journey stayed with us and will continue to do so.”

Elsewhere, The Traveleres (Les Voyageurs) by David Bingong won the Grierson Award in Documentary Competition, and Coyotes by Said Zagha won the Short Film Award in Short Film Competition.

The LFF ends this evening with a screening of 100 Nights of Hero.
