A routine traffic stop in Chino Hills led to the discovery of methamphetamine, a search of a nearby home and the arrest of three residents, authorities said.

According to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, the incident began around 4:38 p.m. on Oct. 16, when Deputy Lopez stopped a vehicle near Rolling Ridge Lane and Glen Ridge Drive for vehicle code violations. The car was occupied by Michael Aguilar, 35, and Tanya Camacho, 33, both of Chino Hills.

Deputies said a search of the vehicle uncovered methamphetamine and other evidence consistent with possession of narcotics for sale. During the investigation, they learned that Camacho’s two young children had been left at a nearby residence on Laguna Court with their grandmother, Mary Seila Rodriguez, 52.

When deputies contacted Rodriguez, they discovered she had outstanding warrants for narcotics-related offenses, according to the sheriff’s department. Investigators obtained a search warrant for the home, where they found methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia in Rodriguez’s bedroom.

Rodriguez, who has two prior drug possession convictions, was arrested under new laws created by Proposition 36 — the 2024 voter-approved measure that increased penalties and treatment requirements for repeat drug offenders. Aguilar was arrested for possession of a controlled substance for sale, and Camacho was arrested for possession of a controlled substance.

All three suspects were booked into the West Valley Detention Center, officials said.

The sheriff’s department said the Chino Hills arrests are among the first cases in which Proposition 36 has been applied locally.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact the Chino Hills Police Department at (909) 364-2000, or leave an anonymous tip through the We-Tip Hotline at 1-800-78-CRIME or wetip.com.
