Three people were killed after a small plane crashed on Thursday in a wooded area in Bath Township, Mich., the authorities said.
The Bath Township Fire Department and Police Department responded to the crash about 5 p.m., Ryan Fewins-Bliss, the Bath Township supervisor, said in a news release.
He said that three people were on the plane, and that all three had been found dead. It was not immediately clear what caused the crash or what the plane’s intended destination was, he said.
It was also not immediately clear where the plane departed from.
Around 6:20 p.m., the Bath Township Police Department advised residents to avoid the intersection of Peacock Road and Clark Road, near the crash site, saying that the area had been “shut down” and emergency responders were handling an “active situation.”
Bath Township is a suburb northeast of Lansing, the capital of Michigan, and has a population of roughly 13,000. The township is about 10 miles north of the campus of Michigan State University in East Lansing.
Mr. Fewins-Bliss said that the Federal Aviation Administration was on the scene and was investigating the crash. In response to an email seeking comment, the agency said it was not responding to media inquiries because of “a lapse in funding.”
The National Transportation Safety Board did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
