Pop Culture Jeopardy! has a new home.
The spinoff of the iconic game show is making a surprise move from Amazon to Netflix for its second season.
The series, which comes from Sony Pictures Television’s Game Show Division, marked the first time that a Jeopardy! series was created for a streaming service and now it will stream on a second service, an extremely rare in the world of entertainment formats.
Colin Jost, who hosted the first season on Amazon, which launched in December, is in talks to return to lead the second season.
The move comes as Amazon is figuring out its unscripted strategy. The streamer has a new global head of television in former Netflix exec Peter Friedlander, who will likely want to put his own stamp on things. Lauren Anderson, who currently oversees unscripted, has been increasingly focusing on the advertising side of the business as Head of Brand & Content Innovation at Amazon MGM Studios and Prime Video, while the unscripted studio, MGM Alternative TV, was recently moved under the division that Friedlander now oversees.
Meanwhile, a number of Amazon unscripted execs have moved over to Netflix over the last year including its head of unscripted series Jenny Falkoff and head of docuseries Alysia Russo.
Pop Culture Jeopardy! is a new twist on the classic show that originally started in 1964 and features three contestants trying to be experts in categories such as alternative rock, the Avengers, MMA, Broadway, Gen Z and Zendaya.
Contestants, playing in teams of three, will compete in a tournament-style event for the grand prize and ultimate bragging rights.
It launched on Amazon as part of a game show block – Winning Wednesdays – that also featured the Travis Kelce-hosted Are You Smarter Than A Celebrity?, JB Smoove-fronted Buy It Now and Wish List Games. The status of these titles is currently unclear but it’s no surprise to say that Kelce is busy with the Kansas City Chiefs and an upcoming wedding to Taylor Swift so may not be returning to the studio any time soon.
Michael Davies, who serves as showrunner of Jeopardy!, exec produces Pop Culture Jeopardy!. The show will premiere its second season on Netflix in 2026.
“Pop Culture Jeopardy! captivated an audience with its fun and energetic game play, building on the beloved franchise and offering fans an opportunity to test their zeitgeist knowledge,” said Suzanne Prete, President, Game Shows, Sony Pictures Television. “We couldn’t be more thrilled to be partnering with the exemplary team at Netflix, to bring more episodes to our passionate and loyal viewers.”
