SCOTTSBORO, Ala. (WHNT) — Coming off a shocking loss to Brewer, the Scottsboro Wildcats handed Guntersville their first loss of the season, earning them the team of the week.
Scottsboro now sits in a position to win back-to-back region championships with a win over the Arab Knights on Friday.
Senior Taygan Harris says success in the run game helped the Wildcats pull out the 31-13 win over Guntersville.
“I thought really running the ball well and just really bullying them up front just really helped us,” Harris said. “They were really big and strong so being able to run the ball really helped us a lot.”
Coach Tyler Vann says after the team’s loss to Brewer, they had to work to make corrections, but he was proud of the team’s response.
“We had to fix our mindset, we had to fix some things in the locker room. I thought guys did a really good job on Sunday after the loss,” Vann said. “I told them you can’t look back, you can’t fix it anymore, all we can do is look forward and learn from our mistakes as a coaching staff and players, and I thought they did a good job of it.”
Vann says he feels like both teams played a great game Friday night and that the win wasn’t a result of Guntersville’s mistakes, but more about what Scottsboro did right.
“They played really well too, you know, Coach Reese does a really good job, he’s a hall of famer and his team was really well prepared,” Vann said. “Our guys just played really good, played one of the better games we played all year, hopefully we can continue that.”
A win over Arab would give Scottsboro its first back-to-back region championships in school history. Something Vann says would be a big deal for his players.
“It’d be awesome for our guys to remember that, you know, they’ve won back-to-back area titles when it was area in the 90s, but since we went to region play, they haven’t won back-to-back region championships,” Vann said. “It’s a big deal, you know, I always try to find things for our guys to look at, you know, a chance to make history, a chance to do something special.”
