MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WHNT) — For those looking for jobs in Alabama, the state has a newly implemented resource that could help.
Thursday, Gov. Kay Ivey announced the state’s new Department of Workforce during an event in Montgomery. Leaders say this new department will revolutionize the way people go to work in Alabama.
“Many of our potential workers are sitting out the game,” Ivey said. “Some are unable to suit up and join in the play due to personal barriers in their lives.”
Whatever those barriers might be, Ivey said the Department of Workforce is there to help. She said Alabama has one of the lowest labor participation rates in the country at 57.8%.
“To all of these folks, and others, we have good news,” Ivey said. “Alabama is launching a new recruitment plan of more accessible job training and employment services, to put these sideline sitters in the game.”
That plan, through the new department, can help you find a job, navigate unemployment or locate a career center.
According to Greg Reed, Workforce Secretary, the agency is partnering with the Department of Transportation to provide rides and even help people get to work.
“Whatever you’re interested in, we want to be a centralized location where- whether an employer or a job seeker, can access information through the Alabama Department of Workforce. And know that we’re here for you,” he said.
Servicemen and women can also find a centralized location through the Veterans Resource Center. Department of Veterans Affairs Commissioner Jeffrey Newton said the hub, based in Montgomery, will help with the transition into civilian life.
“You know, if we get them a job right up front, if we help them with their veterans’ claims right up front, and if they have any mental health issues, we’re gonna be there for them with this new center,” Newton explained.
Sen. Bobby Singleton (D-Greensboro) said, “Transportation for people to get to work is gonna be huge. Apprenticeship is gonna be huge. Bringing all of that under one umbrella, being able to match talent with jobs… I think Alabama’s on the right road, and on the right path.”
