We’ve confirmed that Jim Carrey is in talks to star in Warner Bros.’ live-action feature take of The Jetsons with Colin Trevorrow also eyeing to direct.

Trevorrow and Joe Epstein are in talks to write.

The original animated series was produced by Hanna-Barbera Productions and aired on ABC from Sept. 23, 1962-March 17, 1963. There was an animated series reboot that ran from 1985-1987.

The show followed George Jetson, corporate suit dad, in future world of flying cars, high-rises and moving sidewalk escalators. He works for a cantankerous boss, Mr. Spacely. George’s wife is Jane, posh teenage daughter is Judy, and little son Elroy. Rosie the robot is confined to chores.

There was a 1990 big screen animated take of the show which grossed just over $20 million stateside.

One of Warners’ more popular live-action takes of a Hanna-Barbera cartoon was Scooby-Doo which was released in 2002 and spawned a 2004 sequel, Scooby-Doo: Monsters Unleashed. Raja Gosnell directed both off a script by James Gunn (now Warner Bros’ co-Head of DC). Freddie Prinze Jr starred as Fred, Sarah Michelle Gellar was Daphne, Matthew Lillard played Shaggy and Linda Cardellini broke out as Velma. Both movies grossed close to a half billion at the global box office.

Warners had no comment. Carrey, the No. 1 blockbuster star of original feature comedies in the 1990s and early aughts before those became extinct in the streaming era, has found success in franchises of late, specifically, Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog series playing villains Ivo Robotnik and, in the third installment, Gerald Robotnik. That trilogy had grossed north of $1.2 billion.
