“Red is my favorite color,” Thomas Vermeer, 41, said as we chatted about the bright turtleneck peeking out from beneath his trench coat, which he described as red orange. “It’s the most screaming color of them all — it gets the most attention.”

It was a Wednesday in early October, and he was strolling outside the Palais de Tokyo museum in Paris, where he was visiting from Amsterdam. He explained that his work as a colorist — not of hair, but for interior design, fashion and photography projects — had refined his understanding of palettes. “I have a very strong personal color palette that I use for my home, but also for the work that I do.”

A pair of fiery sneakers and a yellow plaid bag brought more oomph to his ensemble, which also had subtle color details, including a shimmery greenish-blue tint in his coat that lit up when the sun hit it at certain angles. A reason he is drawn to wearing vibrant shades, he said, is because “I really need some color to balance things out with my skin tone and my hair.”
