HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — Redstone Arsenal is by far the largest employer in North Alabama, with more than 40,000 employees. But much of that work is currently paused due to the shutdown.

Friday, the Trump Administration announced layoffs of government employees had started, though details were limited. So far, it appears those layoffs haven’t targeted workers on Redstone Arsenal.

But thousands of workers are furloughed, according to the American Federation of Government Employees Local 1858, which represents around 10,000 workers on Redstone Arsenal.

Abner Merriweather, president of Local 1858, said they represent workers in 28 commands or program offices on the arsenal – and just about all those workers have been furloughed.

The national AFGE union has also filed a lawsuit aiming to stop the reductions in force announced by the Trump Administration. In recent court filings, some layoff details were provided by the Trump Administration’s Office of Management and Budget.

Court records show at least eight agencies experienced cuts, some of which were small, including for the Environmental Protection Agency,  the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Energy.

But other agencies saw bigger cuts, including at least 1,100 Department of Health and Human Services employees and nearly 1,500 employees at the Treasury Department. An estimated total of about 4,200.

Those job cuts follow a significant round of cuts and federal worker buyoutsthat began early this year — under the DOGE job-cutting efforts…

Sunday, Vice President J.D. Vance warned there will be deeper cuts to the federal workforce the longer the shutdown lasts.
