A former student at a special needs school in Torrance, Calif., stabbed three staff members at the school on Monday morning and later claimed to have planted pipe bombs nearby, the police said.

At about 8:15 a.m., the former student, whose name, age and gender were not released, stabbed three staff members and tried to stab a fourth at the Switzer Learning Center, a private school about 20 miles south of downtown Los Angeles, according to a statement from the Torrance Police Department provided by the school.

Two of the staff members were taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and a third was treated at the scene by the Torrance Fire Department, the police said.

The police arrested the former student, who then claimed that had placed two pipe bombs near the school.

Deputy Jacob Sivley, a spokesman for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, said that its arson and explosives detail was investigating the threat, but said he could not provide further details.

It was unclear whether any explosives had been found.

Reached by phone, a representative for the school, which serves students from kindergarten through high school, declined to comment and referred questions to the police.
