Although Grey’s Anatomy fans have endured plenty of loss over the years, Shonda Rhimes has avoided the emotional impact of a couple of characters’ deaths until recently.

The Golden Globe winner admitted the deaths of Lexie Grey (Chyler Leigh) and Mark Sloan (Eric Dane) played out “like a freaking snuff film” upon her recent rewatch of the medical drama, which debuted Season 22 this month.

“You have to think about the fact that I haven’t really watched the show,” the series creator prefaced on the Call Her Daddy podcast.

“So I recently went back and I started watching select pieces of episodes. I watched that episode, and I was horrified. I was like, ‘Oh my God, this is like a freaking snuff film.’ Like, what the heck?”

Rhimes continued, “During the time when I’m doing it, I’m inside the story. I always think my job is to be keeper of the story, not keeper of the actors, not keeper of the show, not keeper of the fans. My whole job is to just be true to the story.”

The Season 8 finale ‘Flight’, which aired on May 17, 2012, saw a group of six doctors in a plane crash that kills Meredith’s (Ellen Pompeo) sister Lexie, a devastating moment for her boyfriend Mark. Even more devastating for fans, Mark succumbed to his injuries from the accident in the Season 9 premiere ‘Going, Going, Gone’, which aired that Sept. 27 on ABC.

“I watch it back now, and I was like, ‘I can’t believe that actually happened, and that people survived watching that. That was horrifying,’” said Rhimes.

Season 22 of Grey’s Anatomy premiered this month on ABC, revealing which character died in the explosion at Grey Sloan that happened in the Season 21 finale.
