PHOENIX — Phoenix shattered a daily rainfall record for the second day in a row on Sunday as thunderstorms continued throughout the Valley.
The previous daily record for rainfall on Oct. 12 was 0.32 inches and was set in 1957. That record was unofficially surpassed around 3 a.m., per National Weather Service (NWS) readings from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport — which the weather authority uses for the city’s official readings.
NWS Meteorologist Gabriel Lojero told KTAR News 92.3 FM that 1.69 inches of rain had fallen at the airport since midnight.
How much rain did other parts of the Valley get during the rainfall record?
Some parts Tempe received more than an inch of rain between 5 a.m. and 11 a.m., according to the Maricopa County Rainfall Interactive Data Map. Rio Salado Parkway and Hardy Drive got 1.54 inches and Broadway Road and the Loop 101, to the southwest, collected 1.06 inches.
During that time period, multiple parts of Mesa were showered with more than an inch of rain. The US 60 at Greenfield Road absorbed 1.10 inches of rain, which is just one exit from Val Vista Drive where the freeway closed due to flooding on Sunday morning before it reopened.
Meanwhile, Chandler and Gilbert received between 0.5 to 0.83 inches of rain.
Most parts of Scottsdale were blanketed with around 0.5 inches of rain or more.
A majority of the West Valley and north Phoenix received less than 0.2 inches of rain. In fact, Glendale, Litchfield Park and Estrella Village were only sprinkled with .04 inches of rain.
The only West Valley cities that received more than an inch of rain were El Mirage and Peoria.
Phoenix also received record rainfall on Saturday with 0.70 inches of rain, surpassing a total that was set in 1928.
