Despite the government shutdown, tax deadline nears for some Californians

Despite the ongoing government shutdown, Uncle Sam is still coming to collect.

Tax officials are reminding Californians impacted by wildfires and straight-line winds that began on Jan. 7 that the deadline to file and pay taxes is Oct. 15.

After FEMA issued a disaster declaration earlier this year, the IRS was able to “postpone certain tax-filing and tax-payment deadlines for taxpayers who reside or have a business in the disaster area.”

The extension applies to affected Los Angeles County residents and business owners. According to the California Franchise Tax Board, the postponement covers several 2024 and 2025 tax filings and payments, including:

  • 2024 individual income tax returns and payments originally due April 15, 2025.
  • Quarterly estimated tax payments due Jan. 15, April 15, June 15 and Sept. 15, 2025.
  • Calendar-year 2024 partnership, limited liability company (LLC) and S corporation returns and payments due March 15, 2025.
  • Calendar-year 2024 corporate and fiduciary income tax returns and payments due April 15, 2025.
  • Calendar-year 2024 tax-exempt organization returns due May 15, 2025.
  • Calendar-year 2025 LLC annual tax payments due April 15, 2025, and LLC estimated fee payments due June 15, 2025.
  • Passthrough Entity Elective Tax payments due March 15 and June 15, 2025.

To qualify, affected taxpayers should write “LA County Fires” at the top of paper returns or follow software instructions when filing electronically.

The extension applies only to filings and payments due between Jan. 7 and Oct. 15. Form FTB 3872 is not required because California’s and the IRS’s relief periods are the same.

State and tax officials first announced the extension in January following a series of wildfires that displaced residents at the start of the year.

More information about the tax extension can be found here.
