This is The Sprint for City Hall, a limited-run series on the critical race for mayor of New York City.

Good afternoon. I’m Katie Glueck and I’m happy to welcome you back to The Sprint for City Hall.

We’re less than a month away from the New York City mayoral election, and early voting starts even sooner, on Oct. 25. Thanks for following along with us in the homestretch.

In this edition, we’ll look at how war in the Middle East continues to shape the mayor’s race and provide the latest on how the election is influencing other contests across the United States. Plus, a movie recommendation from former Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

We’ll start with the news.

  • On the second anniversary of the Oct. 7, 2023, attacks on Israel, Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani released a statement saying that “Hamas carried out a horrific war crime,” adding that he prayed for the release of the hostages, before slamming the Israeli government for responding with what he called a “genocidal war.” We’ll have a closer look at how this issue is shaping the race below.

  • Mamdani has sweeping proposals for making New York more affordable, but he could run into some significant challenges in turning them into reality if elected. Here’s a look at the promises and some potential pitfalls.

  • The general election ad campaign is underway. Memorable developments so far include Cuomo’s use of A.I. to lighten the mood in what has been an often grim campaign, and a Mamdani spoof aimed at appealing to fans of “The Golden Bachelor.”

  • Mayor Eric Adams has been out of the mayoral race for just over a week, and Cuomo has been racing to capitalize, pulling in almost $400,000 in the 36 hours after Adams’s exit, his campaign said. But the bigger question is whether much larger checks will arrive to reinvigorate what have been fairly dormant anti-Mamdani super PACs. So far, they have not.
