A gunman shot two sheriff’s deputies at a courthouse building in Plaquemine, La., on Monday evening, killing one and leaving another in critical condition, the authorities said.

Charles Riley, a deputy who was a six-year veteran of the Iberville Sheriff’s Office, was killed, Sheriff Brett Stasi Sr. of Iberville Parish, La., said in a statement on Tuesday.

The sheriff’s son, Brett Stassi Jr., a deputy who was a 20-year veteran of the office, was wounded and fighting for his life in intensive care after surgery, the sheriff said.

The shooter was killed at the courthouse, the state police said. It was not disclosed whether he had been shot by law enforcement or shot himself.

He was identified by the state police as Latrell Clark, 27, of White Castle, La. At the time of the shooting, he was being booked in a sexual assault case. The authorities did not say how the suspect had obtained the gun.

Sheriff Stassi said he would defer to the state police for further details on the case.

Iberville Parish is southwest of Baton Rouge. The building where the shooting took place also contains offices for the parish government and the sheriff.
