One sheriff’s deputy was fatally shot and another deputy was critically wounded on Monday night when a Louisiana man tried to wrestle away one of their guns while he was being arrested, the authorities said.

The man was also fatally shot in the struggle, during which, the Louisiana State Police said, several bullets were fired. The shooting occurred at a courthouse building in Plaquemine, La., where one the deputies had just finished interviewing the suspect in connection with a sex crimes investigation, the Louisiana State Police said on Tuesday.

It was not immediately clear if all the gunshots had come from the same gun.

Charles Riley, a deputy who was a six-year veteran of the Iberville Parish Sheriff’s Office, was taken to a hospital, where he died, the authorities said in a statement on Tuesday.

Capt. Brett Stassi Jr., a 20-year veteran of the sheriff’s office who is also the sheriff’s son, was wounded and was in critical but stable condition on Tuesday, the police said.

The ages of the two deputies were not immediately available.

According to the State Police, Deputy Riley was assisting Captain Stassi when he was killed.

The authorities identified the suspect as Latrell Clark, 27, of White Castle, La., At the time of the shooting, he was being booked in a sexual assault case.

The sheriff’s office said that it would defer to the State Police for further details on the case.

In a social media post on Monday night, Gov. Jeff Landry of Louisiana paid tribute to the deputies.

“The violence must end,” Mr. Landry wrote on X.

Iberville Parish is southwest of Baton Rouge. The building where the shooting took place also contains offices for the parish government and the sheriff.
