Germany’s foreign minister praises peace plan, set to travel to Egypt
Germany’s top diplomat, , called the ceasefire framework proposed by the United States the most promising plan to end the conflict since the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led attacks and the nearly two years of Israeli strikes that have followed.
“For the first time in two years, it is not just about a ceasefire, but about a viable political solution. Israeli, Arab and Palestinian actors now share ideas on how things can continue in the Gaza Strip,” he told the German public broadcaster, ARD.
Ahead of the second anniversary of the Hamas-led attacks, Wadephul is set to meet his Israeli counterpart, Gideon Saar, as well as relatives of hostages.
Wadephul is also traveling to Egypt. He said talks with Foreign Minister Badr Abdel-Atty about the current negotiation situation were planned in Cairo for Tuesday.
The conservative politician announced the unexpected trip while attending a meeting of EU foreign ministers with the Gulf Cooperation Council in Kuwait. Originally, Wadephul only intended to visit the Gulf states of Qatar and Kuwait.
German leaders have been under increasing public pressure to stop providing weapons and other equipment to Israel. Organizers of a protest in Berlin on September 27 said 100,000 people took to the streets to call for a total arms embargo.
In August, Chancellor Friedrich Merz put partial restrictions in places for weapons sales to Israel.
