PHOENIX — Falcon Field Airport, a Mesa airport that opened in 1941, is adding a new taxiway and runway to the northeast side of the airfield, according to a release.
Financing for the additions comes through a series of grants awarded by the Federal Aviation Administration’s Airport Infrastructure Grant program and the Arizona Department of Transportation.
“These grants demonstrate the FAA and ADOT’s recognition of Falcon Field’s importance as a leading general aviation airport,” Airport Director Corinne Nystrom said in the release.
In addition, the grants will allow for the reconstruction of the West Airport Service Road, the taxiway connector and apron taxiway.

Four total grants were awarded to the airport, including a grant match by the ADOT for $16,772.
The three other grants were $363,485, $85,918 and $206,082, respectively.
“We’re grateful for the federal and state support that enables us to proactively invest in infrastructure upgrades and plan for future capacity,” said Airport Project and Operations Manager Mark Gibbs.
Design work on the project will begin in November and is expected to be completed by spring 2026.
Falcon Field is primarily used for general and business aviation. It is also used as a training facility for aspiring pilots.
The projects are among the 32 identified areas in need of improvement in the 2021 Airport Master Plan.
