A person being pursued by police in Huntington Beach lost their life early Saturday morning after the chase ended in a violent crash.
Huntington Beach Police Department officers were dispatched to the area of Pacific Coast Highway and Brookhurst Street around 12:50 a.m. on reports of a driver maneuvering erratically and running red lights, the department said in a media release.
The officers eventually located the vehicle near Beach Boulevard and Talbert Avenue – almost six miles away – and attempted to stop the driver; however, they failed to yield and the pursuit was initiated.
“The suspect’s vehicle continued to the area of Beach and Warner Avenue, where it struck another vehicle,” HBPD said in the media release. “The suspect vehicle then collided with a pole at a high rate of speed.”
The driver of the car that was struck was not injured and refused transport to a hospital, police said.
The suspect, however, succumbed to their injuries at the scene despite life-saving measures from first responders. No details surrounding their identity were immediately released.
No officers were injured during the chase. The investigation into the crash is being handled by the California Highway Patrol.
