Fox has made it official, confirming that animated comedy The Great North will not be returning for a sixth season. The news comes two weeks after the 20th TV Animation series, executive produced by Wendy Molyneux, Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin and Loren Bouchard, wrapped its fifth season on the network.

“We’re so grateful for everything Wendy, Lizzie, Loren and the amazing cast and crew put into The Great North,” said Michael Thorn, President of Fox Television Network. “It’s difficult to say goodbye, but we’re thankful for the five hilarious seasons The Great North brought to the iconic Animation Domination lineup.”

This closes the book on Fox’s 2025 bubble shows, which also included dramas Rescue HI-Surf, Accused, Alert: Missing Persons Unit and The Cleaning Lady. Of the group, Accused was put on hold with a possibility to return in the future as an event. The rest have been canceled.

While the call on Rescue HI-Surf was made in early May, the decisions on Alert, The Cleaning Lady and The Great North were delayed until after the series’ had finished their most recent seasons. Alert and The Cleaning Lady were canceled in June.

The writing had been on the wall for The Great North since the show was left out of Fox’s mega deal with Fox TV Animation announced in April, which included four-year pickups for The Simpsons, Family Guy, Bob’s Burgers as well as American Dad! in its return to the network.

The addition of American Dad! and Fox’s renewals of its owned animated series Krapopolis and Grimsburg — in addition to the renewals of its three tentpoles — made for a crowded animated slate, pointing to a Great North cancellation.

Created and written by Bob’s Burgers executive producers Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin, as well as writer Minty Lewis, The Great North had a respectable five-year run. It also became Fox’s first animated comedy entry since Bob’s Burgers to stick after a string of shows that didn’t last.

The Great North followed the Alaskan adventures of the Tobin family, as single dad Beef (Nick Offerman) does his best to keep his bunch of kids close – especially his only daughter, Judy (Jenny Slate), whose artistic dreams lead her away from the family fishing boat and into the glamorous world of the local mall.Rounding out the family are Judy’s older brother, Wolf (Will Forte), and his wife, Honeybee (Dulcé Sloan), middle brother Ham (Paul Rust) and 10-year-old-going-on-50 little brother Moon (Aparna Nancherla). While their mother is not in the picture, Judy seeks guidance from her boss, Alyson (Megan Mullally), and her imaginary friend, Alanis Morissette (voicing herself), who appears to her in the Northern Lights.

The Molyneux sisters served as executive producers and showrunners. Bob’s Burgers creator Loren Bouchard was also an executive producer. The Great North is a 20th Television Animation production; its animation was produced through Bento Box Entertainment.
