The Democratic primary for Colorado’s 8th Congressional District is a crowded affair, with at least five Democrats actively campaigning to take on a freshman Republican, Gabe Evans, for what could be one of the most competitive House races in next year’s midterms.

One of them is hoping he has something that can help him stand out: A connection to Taylor Swift.

Well, a tenuous connection.

Evan Munsing, 37, is a Marine Corps veteran working in the financial industry. He is calling for age limits in Congress, and touting his national service as Democrats search for candidates who will present alternatives to Trump-allied Republicans.

Last month I met Munsing for a drink when he was in Washington. He spent the better part of an hour talking about his life story, his plan to win the crowded primary and his proposal to forbid anyone older than 72 from serving in Congress.

But he missed something, at least in the eyes of his aides. A couple days later, one of them checked in with an addendum: Did I know that Munsing went to school with Taylor Swift? And would I like to speak with him again about that?

Indeed I would. This, it seemed, might be an interesting story — if only because of what it says about modern day politics and the desire to seize on anything that might hold people’s attention in today’s crowded political ecosystem.
