PHOENIX — The Phoenix Police Department is urging residents to share their thoughts on its non-lethal weapon policies.
On Thursday, authorities issued a request for public input — the same day two separate shootings involving city officers occurred.
Police are working to develop new policies governing the use and procedures for spit socks, chemical irritants, Tasers, impact weapons, and less-lethal launchers.
A copy of the proposed policies is available online. At the bottom of each draft, there’s a button labeled “Click here to provide feedback.”
Community members can submit feedback through Oct. 31.
Phoenix PD wants public input on non-lethal weapon policies
On the same day Phoenix police put out a request for public comment, officers with the city were involved in two separate shootings with suspects.
The first Thursday shooting took place around 8 a.m. near Seventh Street and Sunland Avenue, north of Southern Avenue. It involved a man with a knife who allegedly ran at police officers with the weapon raised.
Police deployed both lethal and non-lethal weapons. Victor Conrad Altamirano, 58, later died while receiving treatment.
Phoenix officers were involved in yet another shooting, this one near 16th Street and Buckeye Road, around 7 p.m. Thursday. The suspect, whose name was not released, was hospitalized.
