EXCLUSIVE: Luke Brawley’s nonfiction agency Indox has boarded two new titles, Jaripeo by Efraín Mojica and Rebecca Zweig, and Scarlet Girls by Paula Cury. Both films are feature documentary debuts and are currently in post-production.
Indox will handle worldwide festival representation for both films.
Jaripeo is directed by Efraín Mojica and Rebecca Zweig and produced by Sarah Strunin. Set in the rural rodeos of Michoacán—long considered a bastion of machismo—the film reframes this highly traditional space by centering queer rancheros who navigate desire and identity. Synopsis reads: Through a lyrical blend of memory, vérité, and poetic imagery, the protagonists navigate the rodeo’s hypermasculine tradition to find belonging within their community and within themselves.
“We were drawn to working with INDOX because of how filmmaker-friendly Luke is,” the Jaripeo film team said in a statement.
“Since we first met him at Sheffield over a year ago, he’s really understood and supported the vision for Jaripeo. We’re grateful to be part of his slate of films that embrace risk and experimentation, and we’re excited to keep working with him to bring this film into the world.”
The second new addition, Scarlet Girls, is directed and produced by Paula Cury, with Samuel DiDonato also producing, and Natalia Imaz and Omar Lara on board as co-producers. Set in the Dominican Republic, the film confronts the challenges of womanhood in a country where abortion remains criminalized.
The synopsis reads: Through intimate access and evocative visual language, Scarlet Girls follows women as they navigate the stigma of abortion, the realities of forced motherhood, and the difficult choices imposed by a system that denies them autonomy over their own bodies.
“Due to the controversial nature of its subject matter, Scarlet Girls took a long time to complete. It only feels fair to partner with experienced collaborators who will embrace the project with excitement, vision, and care, as Luke/INDOX has done,” Cury said in a statement.
“He believed in us and the film even before it was finished, so it felt right to bring him along on our team as we enter this next phase of festivals and distribution.”
Mojica is a photographer, filmmaker, and performance artist from Michoacán. Their work has been shown in galleries around the world, including in Berlin, Barcelona, and Mexico City. Zweig is a filmmaker, journalist, and poet based in Mexico City. She is a graduate of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, where she was a Teaching and Writing Fellow. Jaripeo received a Sundance Institute grant.
Cury is a Dominican film producer and director. Her short documentary Adrift won the Best Documentary Short at the Flicker’s Rhode Island Film Festival. Scarlet Girls won the Berlinale World Cinema Fund and is finalizing postproduction.
