A 36-year-old man was arrested Saturday after police say he fatally stabbed his father in Riverside.

Officers in the Riverside Police Department responded around 4:17 p.m. on Sept. 27 to reports of a person with traumatic injuries in the 3400 block of Bahia Place.

When Riverside Fire Department paramedics arrived, they found 74-year-old Crispin Rendon in the driveway of a home with multiple stab wounds. He was taken to a local hospital, where he later died.

Police identified the suspect as the victim’s adult son, David Rendon. Authorities said officers attempted for more than two hours to get him to surrender before he eventually gave himself up to SWAT officers and was taken into custody without further incident.

Preliminary findings suggest the younger Rendon may have been experiencing a mental health crisis at the time of the attack, according to investigators. He has been booked into the Robert Presley Detention Center on suspicion of murder and is being held on $1 million bail.

Anyone with information about the case is urged to contact Detective Anthony Watkins at (951) 353-7105 or [email protected], or Detective Nic Cantino at (951) 353-7104 or [email protected]. Anonymous tips can also be submitted through the Riverside Police Department’s “Atlas 1” mobile app.
