Peaky Blinders creator and writer Steven Knight is making good on his many teases that the story of the Shelby family would not end with the original TV series’ sixth season, nor the upcoming feature film. To wit: Peaky Blinders will return to television in the form of two new six-part hourlong sequel series, by the order of Netflix and the BBC. Original Peaky star Cillian Murphy is an executive producer, as is Knight.

The sequels will follow on from the Peaky Blinders movie, which is currently in post-production and is expected to be released next year.

Timing and casting for the series, which will tell the story of a new generation of our beloved Birmingham clan, are to be determined. BBC One will air it in the UK and Netflix globally.

The logline for the upcoming series reads: “Britain, 1953. After being heavily bombed in WWII, Birmingham is building a better future out of concrete and steel. In a new era of Steven Knight’s Peaky Blinders, the race to own Birmingham’s massive reconstruction project becomes a brutal contest of mythical dimensions. This is a city of unprecedented opportunity and danger: with the Shelby family right at its blood-soaked heart.”

As with parts of the Peaky Blinders feature, the new Peaky series will be shot at Knight’s Digbeth Loc. Studios in Birmingham. Both seasons will be produced by Kudos (SAS Rogue Heroes, House of Guinness, Grantchester) and Garrison Drama (Peaky Blinders Seasons 1-6, The Peaky Blinders Movie).

Exec producers alongside Murphy and Knight are Karen Wilson & Martin Haines (Kudos), Jamie Glazebrook (Garrison Drama) and Jo McClellan (BBC). Mona Qureshi and Toby Bentley will oversee for Netflix.

Created and written by Knight and starring Murphy, the original Peaky Blinders series became a global phenomenon. The gangster drama began airing on BBC Two in the UK in 2013, and debuted on Netflix a year later. It won the BAFTA for Best Drama Series for its fourth season and moved to BBC One in 2019 for its fifth and sixth seasons, the latter of which concluded in 2022.

As Peaky grew into its own industry (tie-in books, clothing lines, a video game, ballet and an immersive theater production), Knight has often said he saw the saga continuing — even beyond a feature film.

Today, Knight said, “I’m thrilled to be announcing this new chapter in the Peaky Blinders story. Once again it will be rooted in Birmingham and will tell the story of a city rising from the ashes of the Birmingham blitz. The new generation of Shelbys have taken the wheel and it will be a hell of a ride.”

Netflix’s Mona Qureshi added, “We couldn’t be more excited to be embarking on a new chapter of Peaky Blinders with our wonderful partners at Kudos, Garrison Drama and the BBC. There are few modern storytellers to match Steven Knight and we will be on the edge of our seats as he returns to the streets of Birmingham and to the next generation of the Shelby family. Along with our global audience, we are ready to be captivated anew!”

Lindsay Salt, Director of BBC Drama, commented, “This game-changing show made a huge impact when it first came to our screens 12 years ago and it is one of the BBC’s most-loved dramas. Steven has worked his magic once again and I can’t wait for his scripts to be brought to life when filming begins in Birmingham. We are delighted to be working with Kudos, Garrison Drama and Netflix on this epic show. There’s plenty of drama for Peaky fans to look forward to!”

Patrick Holland, CEO, Banijay UK said, “Peaky Blinders is one of the most iconic, era-defining dramas of our time and Banijay UK is delighted to be helping to bring Steven Knight’s vision for the epic next chapters to life. Made by a brilliant new production partnership, led by Karen Wilson at Kudos, with Jamie Glazebrook from Garrison Drama, the story of the next generation of Shelbys will grip Peaky fans old and new.”
