MADISON, Ala. (WHNT) — The City of Madison is offering free smoke alarm installations to reduce the number of fire-related deaths and injuries.
The City of Madison was selected as a Signature City for the American Red Cross’s Sound the Alarm campaign.
In partnership with Madison Fire and Rescue and the American Red Cross of North Alabama, the city will host a public sign-up event on Tuesday, September 30, from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. at Fire Station 1, 101 Mill Road.
The initiative will provide free smoke alarm installations, fire safety education, and personalizedhome escape planning for Madison-area households.
“We’re honored that Madison has been chosen as a Signature City for this life-savingcampaign,” said Brandy Williams, Fire Chief of Madison Fire and Rescue. “Too often, ourfirefighters see the devastating effects of home fires that could have been prevented with aworking smoke alarm and a simple escape plan. This partnership with the American Red Crossallows us to reach the families who need these tools the most and help make our entirecommunity safer.”
Families who sign up will receive free smoke alarms, assistance in identifying fire hazards, and help in creating a home fire escape plan.
“Most people don’t realize they have only two minutes to escape a house fire, which is thenation’s most frequent disaster,” said Khris Anderson, Executive Director of the American RedCross of North Alabama. “By working together, installing alarms, sharing safety education, andforming trusted community partnerships, we’re not just responding to threats, we’re preventingtragedies and saving lives.”
Smoke alarm installation days are scheduled for October 10, 11, and 12.
In 2025 alone, more than 70 smoke alarms have been installed in 35 Madison homes aspart of the city’s growing collaboration with the Red Cross. According to the U.S. Fire Administration, Alabama experiences a higher home fire fatality rate than the national average.
Since 2014, the Sound the Alarm campaign, part of the Red Cross’s larger Home FireCampaign, has helped install more than 1 million smoke alarms nationwide. Working smokealarms can reduce the risk of death in a home fire by 50%.
