ATHENS, Ala. (WHNT) — With no manager on site to spur the repairs, tenants say that the complex is in worse shape than it’s ever been.
“They should be able to safely go in and out of their door without something falling on their head,” said Johnny Jones, a renter at the complex.
Jones has two school-aged children. He says he fears that the balcony above his front door at the Bonnie Doone apartment complex has deteriorated and will come down at any moment.
“One day they might step out, and it will just decide it wants to give way, and there’s more problems on me that I shouldn’t have to worry about,” Jones said.
The problems tenants say are continuing to mount.
News 19 has been reporting since early July that some tenants are still suffering from inoperable heating and air-conditioning units, overflowing trash in dumpsters and abandoned apartment buildings that have caused pest infestations.
It is still unclear to the tenants who own the property. According to the sign on the management office building, the last known owner of the complex is listed as Millennia Housing Management with an address in Cleveland, Ohio.
“If there is any management, we don’t know of any on-site management,” said Wilbert Woodriff, President of the Limestone County NAACP.
The NAACP has been looking into getting the residents some help for years while pleading with Athens city officials for assistance.
Officials told News 19 that it has been futile to enforce a cleanup when the registered owner has not responded.
Woodriff said that the NAACP has seen enough of the issues, and it’s time to take action.
“They need help because they have been living in just to me seemingly unlivable conditions for a long time, and the community have made recognition to us and I have made recognition of it and our organization,” Woodriff said.
Efforts by News 19 to reach ownership have been unsuccessful.
