WALKER COUNTY, Ala. (WIAT) — Norfolk Southern is conducting an investigation following a trail derailment in the Cordova area early Sunday morning.
According to Norfolk Southern, there were 23 railcars involved. No injuries were reported.
James Reid lives just in front of where the railcars derailed. They created a mess in Reid’s backyard, waking him up in the middle of the night.
“It probably lasted maybe 10, 15 minutes,” Reid said, “It almost sound like thunder is what it sounds like to me.”
There were no spills or leaks involving hazardous materials, Norfolk Southern stated.
“They had mixed freight,” said Cordova Mayor Jeremy Pate. “I don’t have any idea exactly what they were carrying. I just know that they told me no hazardous material.”
Pate said he went to see the scene shortly after the train derailed around 4 a.m. Sunday.
“Everybody’s safe, and the railroad has done a good job of making sure everybody was aware of that,” Pate said.
There will be increased traffic in Cordova while Norfolk Southern works to clean the area, Pate said.
“Everybody just needs to be careful because those roads are narrow down there, and there’s a lot of traffic on them now,” Pate said. “So everybody needs to be aware of this, and they’ll have it cleaned up as quickly as possible.”
Norfolk Southern stated it will continue to clean the scene until the cars and material are gone. Norfolk Southern is investigating what led to the derailment.
