About 58 million pounds of corn dogs and “sausage on a stick” products have been recalled by Hillshire Brands because there may be pieces of wood in the batter, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service.

Hillshire Brands, a subsidiary of Tyson Foods, discovered the issue after receiving complaints from consumers, including at least five of whom reported injuries, according to the U.S.D.A. After investigating, the company discovered that “wooden sticks entered the production process prior to product battering,” the U.S.D.A. said.

The agency said it was “concerned that some products may be in consumers’ refrigerators and freezers, along with school and institution refrigerators and freezers.”

The products in question, State Fair Corn Dogs on a Stick and Jimmy Dean Pancakes & Sausage on a Stick, were packaged between March 17 and Sept. 26 at a facility in Haltom City, Tex., according to a statement by Tyson Foods. The recalled products had been sold online and at retailers around the country, and had also been distributed to customers including school districts and Department of Defense facilities, according to the U.S.D.A.

The products that are being recalled will have “EST-582” or “P-894” on their packaging. (Here are all the affected products.) Consumers who purchased the recalled items are urged to throw them away or return them to the store.

“Out of an abundance of caution, the company is voluntarily recalling this product,” the company said. “This issue is isolated, and no other State Fair or Jimmy Dean brand products are impacted.”
