otherthings by THE SHOPHOUSE is currently presenting Stillness in Blue – Captured Moments, the first solo exhibition in Hong Kong by UK-based Korean ceramist Jaejun Lee. Building on his success at Art Collaboration Kyoto last year, Lee unveils a series of his signature lake-blue glazed porcelain pieces made from the same Korean clay he’s carried over 5,000 miles.
Lee’s practice is defined by a delicate balance between dynamism and calm. Each work undergoes dozens of unseen stages from preparation, forming, glazing to finishing — where meticulous focus meets the unpredictability of firing. For the artist, the kiln is a sacred arbiter: despite careful planning and intuition, the final glaze patterns and textures remain a surprise, teaching him to embrace both unexpected beauty and imperfection. This year’s show carries extra poignancy as the Korean clay he’s used for 18 years has been discontinued; with his remaining stock, Lee captures its final moments in porcelain form.
Among the exhibition’s highlights are Lee’s moon jars, modern interpretations of the mid-Joseon Dynasty vessels that embody Confucian ideals of simplicity and harmony. Traditionally formed from two halves joined at their equator, Lee’s moon jars emerge in porcelain with his signature lake-blue glaze cascading into elegant drips. These works evoke the tranquility of a full moon while reflecting the artist’s deep connection to his cultural heritage — and mark the beginning of Lee’s next creative chapter at otherthings by THE SHOPHOUSE.
