Residents tried to save a Long Beach man’s life after he crashed while possibly driving under the influence on Saturday night, officials said, ultimately leading to his death.

It happened before 10:50 p.m., according to the Long Beach Police Department, when officers responded to reports of a single-vehicle crash in the area of Willow Street and Easy Avenue.

Police arrived to find a 2002 Toyota Camry that had struck a tree in the center median of Willow Street and found that the driver, only identified as a 60-year-old male resident of Long Beach, was the sole occupant of the car.

Nearby residents purportedly pulled the driver out of the mangled vehicle and attempted to render aid until authorities arrived. Paramedics from the Long Beach Fire Department then transported the man to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

A preliminary investigation revealed the man was heading eastbound on Willow Street when witnesses saw him driving erratically, swerving between lanes, before he drove onto the center median and slammed into a tree. No other vehicles were involved.

“At this time, alcohol and speed are being investigated as possible contributing factors to the collision,” stated LBPD.

The driver’s name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

Anyone who may have witnessed the collision is asked to contact LBPD Collision Investigation Detail Detective Joseph Johnson at 562-570-7355. Anonymous tips may be submitted through “LA Crime Stoppers” by calling 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or visiting www.LACrimeStoppers.org.
