HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — An email to employees at Marshall Space Flight Center obtained by News 19 says the center’s director is stepping down.

In the email sent to employees on Thursday, MSFC Director Joseph Pelfrey announced he plans to step down from his current role.

“As the Agency continues to embark on a bold mission to return humans to the moon, it will take the full attention of its leaders and the people they serve,” Pelfrey wrote. “It will also be important for Agency leadership to move forward with a team they choose to execute the tasks at hand. With that in mind, it’s time for me to step out of the Center Director role. I will work with Agency leadership to pursue new ways I can serve our space program and our great Nation.”

Pelfrey referenced Marshall’s 65th anniversary and recent achievements made by the US in space exploration.

The director said he is leaving employees in the capable hands of the rest of the center’s management team.

A NASA Spokesperson said that Pelfrey’s resignation is effective Sept. 25. The agency also said Marshall Deputy Director Rae Ann Meyer will serve as acting director while NASA looks for a new director.

You can read the agency’s full statement here:

“Joseph Pelfrey, director of NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, announced he will step down as center director, effective Sept. 25. Pelfrey will continue to serve the agency as NASA leads the world in unlocking a Golden Age of innovation and exploration. Marshall Deputy Center Director Rae Ann Meyer will serve as acting center director while NASA proceeds with a public, open competition to find the next permanent director at one of the agency’s most important centers for human spaceflight.”
