HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — The Madison County Sheriff’s Office says it has arrested a man and charged him with several counts of possession of child sex abuse material.
MCSO said its Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force assisted the FBI and U.S. Army Criminal Investigations Division in an investigation involving the possession of the material.
The sheriff’s office said the investigation began after multiple cybertips were received by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. MCSO said working with federal partners, John Spencer Murphy, 65, was identified as a suspect. The sheriff’s office said it has charged Murphy with four counts of possession of child pornography.
“This case demonstrates the importance of strong partnerships between local, federal, and national organizations in protecting children from exploitation,” Sheriff Kevin Turner said. “Our office will continue to work tirelessly to ensure those responsible are held accountable.”
MCSO said the investigation remains active and additional charges are expected.
The sheriff’s office said it urges anyone who suspects child exploitation to report it. Tips can be made to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children CyberTipline at www.missingkids.org or by calling 1-800-843-5678. Local concerns may also be reported directly to the Madison County Sheriff’s Office.
