GURLEY, Ala. (WHNT) — Friday was a very exciting day for students at Madison County Elementary School in Gurley. The whole school dressed in gold for a special pep rally to honor 8th grader Josslyne Hulsey.

Hulsey arrived to cheers of “Let’s go Josslyne!” and a gold carpet laid out for her.

Once she reached the center of the gym, Hulsey was able to do a ceremonial ringing of a bell, marking the end of her cancer treatment.

Hulsey was diagnosed with cancer when she was in 5th grade at MCES. She tells News 19 that it’s hard to put into words how that felt.

“I don’t really know,” she said while holding back tears.

Her mom, Ashley Dickerson, stepped in and said “It’s the end of your adventure, you get to start over new.”

A new start that is a long time coming for Hulsey. She said she’s looking forward to getting back to some of her favorite activities.

“I want to start cheering again,” she said.

Thankfully, she’s had plenty of cheerleaders by her side along the way.

“Everybody’s been there to support her, help her and just be there for us,” Dickerson said.

During the pep rally on Friday, Gurley Mayor Stan Simpson declared September 26, 2025, as Josslyne Husley Day in Gurley, Alabama.

“She’s fought this journey with such grace and style and strength,” Simpson said.

On Friday, the school also hosted a fundraiser called “Hats On For Josslyne.” For a $2 donation, students were able to wear hats to school on Friday.

Those $2 donations added up quickly, and in just one day, the student body was able to raise more than $700 to be donated to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
