Iranian President Pezeshkian: Iran has ‘no intention’ to build nuclear bomb

President Masoud Pezeshkian also spoke at the UN General Assembly on Wednesday.

Pezeshkian told the chamber that Iran has “no intention” to build a nuclear bomb.

“I hereby declare once more before this assembly that Iran has never sought and will never seek to build a nuclear bomb. We do not seek to build a nuclear bomb. We do not seek nuclear weapons,” Pezeshkian said in his speech.

Pezeshkian’s speech comes in the wake of Israel bombing Iranian nuclear and military facilities in June, in what became known as the 12 day war.

The US military under administration also carried out targeted bombings of three Iranian nuclear sites on June 22.

Pezeshkian characterized the Israeli and US attacks as a “grevious blow upon international trust and the very prospect of peace in the region.”

Trump has repeatedly stated that the Islamic Republic of Iran must not obtain a nuclear weapon.

During Trump’s first term in 2018, he pulled the US out of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), a deal in which Iran agreed to curb its nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief. The US then ramped up sanctions and other punitive measures against Iran after the withdrawal.

European ‘snapback sanctions’ on Iran expected soon

China, France, the UK, Russia, Germany and the EU are also signatories in the JCPOA.

Last month, France, the UK, and Germany they would move forward with , saying Tehran is not keeping up with its commitments in regards to the JCPOA.

Pezeshkian’s assurances that Iran is not seeking a nuclear bomb come before a Saturday deadline when the snapback sanctions will be enacted.

Pezeshkian is meeting with European leaders such as French President Emmanuel Macron at the UNGA in a last-minute bid to avert the sanctions.
