A woman is in critical condition after being shot multiple times by a former employee of a Riverside County business who then turned the gun on himself, police announced Wednesday.
The Sept. 23 violence broke out at around 8:10 a.m. at a tow yard in the 6100 block of Columbus Avenue, according to the City of Riverside Police Department.
Investigators say the suspect, now identified as 53-year-old Ontario resident Ruben Zavala Negrete, a former employee at a business on the property until last week, returned and fired at several employees near one of the buildings.
The 53-year-old then turned his attention to an unidentified female in her late 40s, who he shot multiple times.
“Immediately afterward, he shot and killed himself,” police said.
Both officers and firefighter-paramedics responded to the immediately began providing medical aid to the woman who was rushed by ambulance to a nearby trauma center in critical condition.
Negrete was declared dead at the scene.
While the victim remains hospitalized in critical condition, police said she is expected to survive the violent attack.
Investigators did not provide any details about the gunman’s relationship to the woman beyond the fact that he was formerly employed on the property.
