Royalston, Mass. | $539,900
A Classical Revival house built in 1800, on 1 acre
This four-bedroom, one-bathroom house is within walking distance of Royalston’s Town Hall, as well as its library, post office, and historical society. Like many other houses in town, its exterior is painted white and its shutters are forest green. Royalston Falls, a 45-foot waterfall and granite gorge popular with hikers, is 10 minutes away, as are trails and forests that straddle the border between Massachusetts and New Hampshire. The nearest grocery and hardware stores are in Athol, Mass., a 15-minute drive.
Driving to Worcester takes about an hour, and Springfield and Boston are both around two hours away.
Size: 2,166 square feet
Price per square foot: $249
Indoors: This house is set behind a lawn, with a green front door flanked by leaded-glass panels. Inside, stairs in the foyer lead to the second level. The living room, off one side of the foyer, has a wood-burning fireplace and a few of the home’s many six-over-six windows. A candelabra chandelier is new but looks in keeping with the home’s 19th century style.
A wide doorway divides the front half of the living room from the back half, which has its own sitting area and windows that face the backyard. Off the other side of the foyer is a dining room with wide-plank floors, and at the back of this level is the kitchen, where the stainless steel appliances include a Viking gas range.
All four bedrooms are on the second floor, off a landing where the walls are painted yellow. The primary bedroom fits a king-size bed and has windows that face the back and side yards. Two bedrooms on this side of the house have decorative fireplaces, and a bedroom across the hall fits a queen-size bed and a desk. The bathroom is also on this level, with a claw foot soaking tub and a schoolhouse sink.
Outdoor space: A side porch off the dining room is framed by hydrangeas, and around the corner is a backyard landscaped with grass and mature trees, with ample space for a flower or vegetable garden. An attached garage holds two cars.
