One person was killed and another was hospitalized after a suspected DUI driver crashed into their vehicle in San Bernardino County.

The suspect was identified as Exon Herrera Hernandez, 23, of Apple Valley, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.

On Sept. 20, deputies responded to a crash near Kiowa Road and Kiowa Place in Apple Valley around 11:35 p.m.

A preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect was driving a Nissan Altima behind the victims’ Hummer H2. The suspect rear-ended the Hummer, pushing the SUV off the road and causing it to roll over.

Both the driver and passenger inside the Hummer suffered major injuries and were rushed to local hospitals for treatment.

The victim driver, identified only as a 44-year-old man, later died from his injuries. The passenger, Salvador Rubio Tamayo, 22, of Victorville, remains hospitalized in stable condition.

The suspect, Hernandez, was later found to be under the influence of alcohol, police said. He was arrested for vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated with gross negligence.

No further details on the deadly crash were released as the incident remains under investigation.

Anyone who witnessed the crash or has additional information is asked to call Deputy T. Arlotti at the Apple Valley Sheriff’s Station at 760-240-7400 or Sheriff’s Dispatch at 760-956-5001. Anonymous tips can be provided to We-Tip at 1-800-782-7463 or online at wetip.com.
