EXCLUSIVE: While production on Spider-Man: Brand New Day has been paused for a week, after star Tom Holland suffered a concussion on set, casting on the project continues, as Marvin Jones III has been tapped for the role of Tombstone, sources tell Deadline.

Reps for Sony declined to comment; reps for Marvel couldn’t be reached. Jones comes to the new live-action Spider-Man after being tapped to voice Tombstone in Sony’s animated Oscar winner Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, as well as the threequel Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, which is still forthcoming.

Also known as Lonnie Lincoln, Tombstone is one of New York’s nastiest crime bosses — a Marvel villain who is a recurring foil to Spidey in the comics. Created by writer Gerry Conway and artist Alex Saviuk, the character is a hulking African-American albino with filed teeth and near-indestructible skin. He first appeared in Web of Spider-Man #36 in March 1988.

Production on Brand New Day resumes September 29. The film is still on course to meet its theatrical release date of July 31, 2026. As previously announced, others making their introduction to the live-action MCU in this film will include Sadie Sink and Liza Colón-Zayas, whose roles haven’t yet been disclosed. Alongside Zendaya, who reprises as MJ, Mark Ruffalo is expected to reprise his role as The Hulk.

Shang-Chi‘s Destin Daniel Cretton is directing, with Amy Pascal and Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige producing. Brand New Day will be the first live-action Spider-Man since Spider-Man: No Way Home, which went on to gross over $1.9 billion upon its release in December 2021. All past films in the Holland-led Spidey series have been major draws, with Spider-Man: Far from Home bringing in over a billion in 2019 and Spider-Man: Homecoming grossing over $880 million two years prior to that.

Best known for his turn as supervillain Tobias Whale in The CW’s Black Lightning, based on characters from DC Comics, Jones has recently been seen starring opposite Kerry Washington in Joe Carnahan’s Lionsgate pic Shadow Force. Other credits include All American: Homecoming, The Equalizer, and Season 2 of Paramount’s Halo opposite Pablo Schreiber. Upcoming, he’ll be seen starring opposite Emilia Clarke and Adria Arjona in Amazon’s Criminal and in Jonás Cuarón’s indie, Gringo Champion.

Jones is repped by Buchwald, Framework Entertainment, and Goodman, Genow, Schenkman.
