HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — A man has pleaded guilty to assault for a 2024 crash that put a Madison County Sheriff’s deputy in the hospital.

Bul Bior Ajang pleaded guilty to first-degree assault in June of 2025. He is sentenced to 15 years in jail, split to serve two years with three years probation and credit for time served.

According to the Huntsville Police Department, Ajang was initially charged with first-degree assault after he didn’t change lanes and hit Detective Josh Moseley’s cruiser while he was working traffic control on I-565.

Police said Moseley’s emergency lights were activated and his car was stationary when Ajang hit him from behind. He was taken to Huntsville Hospital, where he spent over a week and underwent several surgeries.

Court records show that Moseley filed a lawsuit against Ajang, Huntsville Utilities and Gridco, Inc. for “negligence and wantonness.”

The lawsuit claims that Huntsville Utilities and Gridco, Inc. were negligent in protecting Moseley by failing to alert drivers of his presence and that the right-hand lane was closed. It argues the two companies are “recommended or required by publications, standards, or regulations issued by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the United States Department ofTransportation (DOT), and the Federal Highway Administration (FHA),” to ensure these safety measures are followed.

It says that the companies should’ve displayed “move over” signs and put barrels or cones out.

The lawsuit also states that Ajang was under the influence of “intoxicating substances and failed to take evasive action when approaching a stationary vehicle.”
