(NEXSTAR) — Both chambers of Congress have approved resolutions to honor conservative influencer Charlie Kirk, just days before many of those lawmakers attended his public memorial service in Arizona.

Kirk, 31, was fatally shot while speaking at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah, on Sept. 10. A 22-year-old Utah resident is now facing charges in his death.

In the Senate, Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL) introduced a resolution to make October 14, 2025 — which would have been Kirk’s 32nd birthday — a National Day of Remembrance for Kirk. Scott called Kirk’s death “a devastating loss.”

“Charlie was a good man – a devout husband, father, and friend. His life was shaped by his faith and the idea that in America, debate and discussion are crucial to the betterment of our country. He believed in God, the American dream, the value of family, and the principles of our great nation,” Scott said in his remarks. “Charlie dedicated his life to the idea that the power of our ideas can not only win the day, but start a movement. That’s exactly what he did.”

The resolution received unanimous consent; however, because it is a simple resolution, it is not law and won’t require a full vote in the Senate.

In the House, several lawmakers introduced resolutions last week to honor Kirk and condemn political violence. On Friday, Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) confirmed a resolution to honor “the life and legacy of our friend Charlie Kirk” had passed.

While neither action established a national holiday, Scott’s order “encourages educational institutions, civic organizations, and citizens across the United States to observe [Oct. 14] with appropriate programs, activities, prayers, and ceremonies that promote civic, engagement and the principles of faith, liberty, and democracy that Charlie Kirk championed.”

Scott is among the thousands of people who gathered Sunday in Glendale, Arizona, for a public memorial for Kirk.

Arizona is the adopted home state of Kirk, who grew up outside Chicago and founded Turning Point there before moving the organization to Phoenix. Vice President JD Vance, who has said Kirk’s advocacy was a big reason Trump picked him to serve as vice president, transported Kirk’s casket from Utah to Arizona aboard Air Force Two the day after his death, and he later served as a guest host of Kirk’s podcast.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
