Sen. Alex Padilla introduces redistricting measure, mulls political future

Senator Alex Padilla (D-California) has introduced a bill to ban mid-decade redistricting, a move he says will ensure “fair” redistricting practices.

The California Democrat argues that redistricting should happen only once every 10 years, following the census, and be done by an independent body to remove political influence.

He has also appeared in a “Yes on 50” campaign ad, promoting a California ballot measure that would allow for a new, temporary congressional map. This measure aims to counteract mid-cycle redistricting efforts in Texas, which could affect the balance of power in the U.S. House.

“The best way to fairly redistrict is to do it once every 10 years after the census, and to have an independent body do this so that we take the politics out of drawing the lines,” Padilla told Inside California Politics host Nikki Laurenzo. “Sadly, Republicans have not wanted to vote for it, but it’s a critical reform for the future of our democracy.”

The introduction of this legislation comes amid speculation about Padilla’s political future. He is reportedly considering a run for California governor in 2026. A recent poll by Emerson College and The Hill for Inside California Politics placed Padilla fourth among potential candidates.

The poll results will be discussed further on this weekend’s Inside California Politics, airing Nexstar television stations in California at the following times:
