A person connected to a homicide and a carjacking in Orange County was shot after a brief chase on Friday night, authorities say.
Per the the Carlsbad Police Department, officers were dispatched to the 2300 block of Rising Glen Way around 9:53 p.m.
When the officers arrived, they found an unresponsive female suffering from multiple gunshot wounds who appeared to have been shot during the course of a carjacking.
“Despite lifesaving efforts, paramedics pronounced the female deceased at the scene,” authorities said. “The female’s vehicle was taken during the incident.”
A license plate reader was used to track the vehicle, which was later located in Newport Beach. A short pursuit ensued as the driver made their way to Laguna Hills, where officers from both the Newport Beach Police Department and the Irvine Police Department opened fire at El Toro Road and Avenida de la Carlota, according to the O.C. Sheriff’s Department.
Video obtained by KTLA shows many rounds being fired outside an In-N-Out restaurant as bystanders rushed for cover. The suspect was struck by gunfire, and he died from his injuries after being taken to an area hospital, the sheriff’s department said.
“At this time, investigators believe this incident was isolated, and there is no indication of an ongoing threat to the community,” Carlsbad Police Department officials assured the public.
Neither of the two individuals involved were identified by name.
