Samuel Goldwyn Films has acquired the U.S. distribution rights for Anders Thomas Jensen’s The Last Viking, starring Mads Mikkelsen.
The Last Viking marks Anders Thomas Jensen’s sixth feature as a director. All six films star Mads Mikkelsen and Nikolaj Lie Kaas. The film’s official synopsis reads: Anker is released from prison following a fifteen-years sentence for robbery. The money from the heist was buried by Anker’s brother, Manfred. Only he knows where it is. Unfortunately, Manfred has since developed a mental disorder, causing him to forget all. Together, the brothers embark on an unexpected journey to locate the money and discover who they really are.
The film debuted at this year’s Venice Film Festival, followed by the North American premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. Thomas Jensen directs from a screenplay he wrote. The film was produced by Sisse Graum Jørgensen and Sidsel Hybschmann for Zentropa Entertainments4 in co-production with Zentropa Sweden and Film i Väst. TrustNordisk is on international sales.
The deal was negotiated between Peter Goldwyn, President at Samuel Goldwyn Films, and Susan Wendt, Managing Director at TrustNordisk.
“After our success with the Oscar-winning Another Round, we’re delighted to have another Mads Mikkelsen project to bring to U.S. theaters next year – especially one from acclaimed filmmaker Anders Thomas Jensen,” said SGF president Peter Goldwyn. “The pairing of Mads Mikkelsen with Nikolaj Lie Kaas is truly something amazing.”
Susan Wendt of TrustNordisk added: “I’m really glad to have closed yet another deal with Samuel Goldwyn, who is really passionate about the film, and I couldn’t imagine a better partner bringing it to US audiences.”
