Leave it to Velez to transform NYC’s storied Cabaret Club, The Box, into the BAD LANDS universe, unveiling her striking new folkloric foray of womenswear with a Wild Western twist. The Velez antihero has hopped on a train straight to the depths of Great Depression Dandyism, adventuring physically into a new land, and, for the label, into grittier yet more boundless commentary on the American Dream.
Per the show notes, Velez describes the collection as “a portrait of the dust bowl detachment, and folkloric escapism, of vagabonds, beatniks, prospectors, and gutter mystics.”
“Nihilism, nostalgia, and naturalism define the BADLAND universe. In keeping with the brand’s inspirational pull from literary legacies of apocalyptic America, the new season centers around the themes of prewar discourse: crumbling social orders, quandaries of individualism vs collectivism, and the elusiveness of the American dream”
