A driver who was fleeing police in a reportedly stolen vehicle was killed after crashing into a home in South Pasadena Friday.

South Pasadena police initially received an alert from a license plate reader about a stolen Dodge Charger. Police found the car, but the suspect refused to pull over, leading officers on a pursuit.

Shortly before 5 a.m., police cancelled the chase after the man continued driving erratically. Less than a minute later, he crashed into a home in the 300 block of Orange Grove Avenue.

Video from the scene showed the vehicle had flipped over before slamming into the homeowner’s garage.

Officers arrived shortly and despite lifesaving measures, the driver was pronounced at the scene. He was only identified as a 20-year-old Altadena man, Pasadena Now reported.

The home’s exterior was left with heavy damage, but no occupants were injured.

Neighbors in the area said cars are constantly speeding down Orange Grove Avenue and that Friday’s crash was the second time in two years that a driver was killed after slamming into the same house.

In the previous crash, which occurred in August 2023, one person was killed and two others were hospitalized when the driver hit speeds of 100 miles per hour before losing control and crashing into the home’s garage.

“It’s sad,” said a neighbor named Evan. “This is twice now that somebody has died right there in that driveway in two years.”

The homeowners told KTLA’s Rachel Menitoff that they’re shaken up over the crash but are glad no one inside the house was hurt. Neighbors sympathized with the homeowners who were left with the costly damage.

“Now they have to deal with it through no fault of their own,” Evan said. “Their house, their garage, is destroyed. It’s a sad thing.”

No further details were released as the incident remains under investigation. The suspect’s name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin by the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office.
